An Algerian Constitution was first adopted byareferendum in 1963, following the Algerian War ofIndependence(1954-62); originally, it was to be drafted by aconstitutionalassembly led by Ferhat Abbas, but this body wassidelined byAlgeria's first President, Ahmed Ben Bella. In its 1963form, theconstitution declared Algeria a one-party state ruled bythe formerresistance movement, the National Liberation Front (FLN).Thisconstitution was suspended by the military coup d'état of1965.After years of ruling by executive fiat as leader oftheRevolutionary Council, Houari Boumédienne issued asecondconstitution in 1976, emphasizing the importance of socialismand -formally - restoring political institutions to their primacyoverthe military establishment. (Boumédienne was then electedthecountry's second president, after having left the post vacantforeleven years.)In 1986, Boumedienne's successor Chadli Bendjedid modifiedtheconstitution to allow for free-market reforms, and, after the1988October Riots, brought in a new constitution in 1988. Thiswasapproved in a referendum by 73% on 23 February 1989. Itintroduceda multi-party system, removing the FLN from its role asleadingparty, and made no mention of socialism; instead itpromised"freedom of expression, association, and assembly". A 1992militarycoup introduced a state of emergency, which suspended partsof thenew constitution, as the Algerian Civil War began.In 1996, the constitution was further modified, allowingtheformation of political parties not "founded on areligious,linguistic, racial, sex, corporatist or regional basis"orviolating "the fundamental liberties, the fundamental valuesandcomponents of the national identity, the national unity,thesecurity and integrity of the national territory, theindependenceof the country and the People’s sovereignty as well asthedemocratic and republican nature of the State."A further proposed revision, believed to be intended to removethepresidential term limit (Article 74) to allow the President torunfor office indefinitely often, was discussed during 2006 byPrimeMinister Abdelaziz Belkhadem's government. This was widelyseen tobe instigated by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who hadbeenelected to his second and, constitutionally, final mandate in2004.Other changes discussed concerned a move towards apresidentialsystem, introducing the post of Vice President amongotherthings.The constitution was modified in 2008 updated constitution

The Constitution of Argentina is one oftheprimary sources of existing law in Argentina. Its first versionwaswritten in 1853 by a Constitutional Assembly gathered in SantaFe,and the doctrinal basis was taken in part from the UnitedStatesConstitution. It was then reformed in 1860, 1866, 1898, 1949,1957(which mainly repealed the 1949 reform), and the currentversion isthe reformed text of 1994.

The Constitution of Afghanistan is thesupremelaw of the state Afghanistan, which serves as the legalframeworkbetween the Afghan government and the Afghan citizens.AlthoughAfghanistan (Afghan Empire) was made a state in 1747 byAhmad ShahDurrani, the earliest Afghan constitution was writtenduring thereign of Emir Abdur Rahman Khan in the 1890s followed bythe 1923version.The current Afghan constitution was approved by the consensusinJanuary 2004 after the 2003 loya jirga. The Constitutionconsistsof 162 articles and was officially signed by Hamid KarzaionJanuary 26, 2004. It evolved out of the AfghanConstitutionCommission mandated by the Bonn Agreement. Theconstitutionprovides for an elected President and NationalAssembly. Thetransitional government of interim president HamidKarzai was putin place after the June 2002 loya jirga. The firstpresidentialelections after the new constitution was in effect,took place inOctober 2004, and Karzai was elected to a five-yearterm. The firstelections for the National Assembly were delayeduntil September2005.
